چکیده

Games, with features such as voluntariness, fantasy, specific rules/goals, artificial gains/payoffs, competition or cooperation, sensory and motor involvement, challenge, control, low costs of trial and error, and associated amusement (Garris, Ahlers, & Driskell, 2002), might have existed as a type of leisure activity as early as the dawn of civilization, when adults had sufficient food and children were not habitually starving (Dempsey, Haynes, Lucassen, & Casey, 2002). Games not only can be used for recreation but also for educational/training purposes. For instance, in ancient China, individuals learned to play games like Weiqi, or “Go” as it is known in Western countries, to practice various moves in order to become commanders or military strategists. In the modern world, serious, game-based computer systems are widely used for military training as well as for classroom learning (Raybourn, 2007). Currently, learners have an exponentially increasing quantity and variety of educational games available to them (Dipietro, Ferdig, Boyer, & Black, 2007). abStract

Using Cognitive Load Theory to Tailor Instruction to Levels of Accounting Students' Expertise

Tailoring of instructional methods to learner levels of expertise may reduce extraneous cognitive load and improve learning. Contemporary technology-based learning environments have the potential to substantially enable learner-adapted instruction. This paper investigates the effects of adaptive instruction based on using the isolated-interactive elements effect that occurs when learners who ar...

The Effects of Attention Cueing on Visualizers' Multimedia Learning

The present study examines how various types of attention cueing and cognitive preference affect learners’ comprehension of a cardiovascular system and cognitive load. EFL learners were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: non-signal, static-blood-signal, static-blood-static-arrow-signal, and animation-signal. The results indicated that attention cueing yielded similar performance but h...

An Analytics-Based Approach to Managing Cognitive Load by Using Log Data of Learning Management Systems and Footprints of Social Media

Traces of learning behaviors generally provide insights into learners and the learning processes that they employ. In this article, a learning-analytics-based approach is proposed for managing cognitive load by adjusting the instructional strategies used in online courses. The technology-based learning environment examined in this study involved a video conferencing system and learning manageme...

Metacognitive Load - Useful, or Extraneous Concept? Metacognitive and Self-Regulatory Demands in Computer-Based Learning

Instructional design theories such as the cognitive load theory (CLT) or the cognitive theory of multimedia learning (CTML) explain learning difficulties in (computer-based) learning usually as a result of design deficiencies that hinder effective schema construction. However, learners often struggle even in well-designed learning environments. In this theoretical paper, I will argue that cogni...
